Solstice Configuration (December 21, 2016)

The first thing I notice when I look at the chart for this solstice is that Uranus and Jupiter are at opposition. This is pretty significant all by itself.

This opposition of Uranus and Jupiter is the first opposition of a new Uranus – Jupiter cycle which started in 2010. The first conjunction of this new cycle happened on June 8 of that year, when Jupiter met Uranus at 0 degrees 18 minutes of Aries. Now almost 7 years later, we are at the mid-point of their first cycle.  There will be a total of 6 complete cycles before Uranus and Jupiter are together again directly beneath the square of Pegasus in the 2090s.

In June 2010 we crossed a boundary entering a new 84-year adventure of awakening.  Uranus is presently still moving through Aries, the sign of new beginnings. Jupiter is now in Libra, the sign of balance and partnership.

In his book, Cosmos and Psyche, Richard Tarnas identifies the Uranus – Jupiter cycle as one of “rebellions and awakenings.” Tarnas observes that their conjunction correlates historically with the timing of the American and French revolutions, along with key scientific discoveries of Copernicus, Kepler, and Galileo, to name a few.

Notable events coinciding with the Uranus – Jupiter opposition include invention of the telegraph, invention of the first personal computer, the first manned-balloon flights, experimental confirmation of Einstein’s general theory of relativity, and the dismantling of the Berlin Wall.

In 1968-69 Uranus and Jupiter were having a conjunction along with Pluto. That timeframe is connected with many social and technological breakthroughs, such as the first manned moon landing (Apollo 11), numerous student revolts and public protests, the beginning of the gay liberation movement, and the Woodstock music festival.

In this current Uranus – Jupiter opposition, Pluto is square to both planets. This formation is also referred to as a T-square. This configuration adds pressure to the opposition and brings emphasis to the middle planet. Pluto is injecting transcendent energy into the awakening cycle. Pluto’s intensity can cause feelings of being overwhelmed. However, because we’ve had such a long and thorough baptism in the energy of the Pluto – Uranus square, the momentum of our experience since 2010 provides support and acceleration for moving us gracefully through the opposition. Strong potentials for discovery and transformation are inherent.

Also supporting our graceful navigation of the Uranus – Pluto – Jupiter T-square are two helpful trine aspects. The first is between Saturn and Uranus. The second is between Venus and Jupiter. Saturn is currently in a waning trine with Uranus. This trine brings the blessings of the current Uranus – Saturn cycle into dissemination, the seeds of what’s been blooming since 1988 – 89. The liberating events (Uranus) of the end of the cold war are now reverberating in our experience of structure (Saturn). The Sun is close enough with Saturn that they are working synergistically in the trine with Uranus. The Sun illuminates the natural dominance of consciousness over structure (Uranus beyond Saturn).

The trine of Jupiter and Venus emphasizes our natural joy found in connectedness. Venus and Jupiter together illustrate the actual nature of joy and its immanent presence within every being. The Moon’s wide trine with Venus enhances our access to beauty and creativity in the process. Venus trining the Moon in Libra enhances our state, helping us reach the place of the truest inner balance.

Venus and Saturn are also in narrow sextile (55 degrees). This aspect emphasizes the patterns of attraction in our lives. This is especially helpful for the graceful movement of energy, and attracting what is needed from present circumstances.

Pluto is also in a close conjunction with Mercury. This aspect brings the potential for transformed understanding and powerful expressions of illuminated thought.

One challenge we should be aware of is the conjunction of Neptune, Mars, and the South Node. The conjunction resonates with confused decisions based on old patterns of consciousness. However, the North Node is aligned with the asteroid, named in 1856 for the great Mother Goddess, Isis. Isis with the North Node opposite Mars and Neptune call us to gather the broken pieces of our past experiences, breathe new life into them, and behold new vista amidst a new horizon.

We have crossed a boundary in our adventure of awakening.
